Navratri 2021: What is Dhunuchi dance? Why is it important in the worship of Goddess Durga?

Navratri 2021: There is a lot to look forward to during the Navratri celebrations. The nine-day festival to worship Goddess Durga is celebrated in the Hindu month of Ashwin. This year Shardiya Navratri started on October 7, 2021 and will end on October 15, 2021.

The onset of Durga Puja unleashes the festive spirit in Bengalis. Durga Puja evenings are incomplete if people don’t take the floor to dance to the rhythmic beats of dhaak and bells, holding earthen pots billowing a fragrant smoke. The impromptu dance is called Dhunuchi Naach, a prominent custom and one of the most awaited activities during the evening Durga aarti every day.

What is Dhunuchi dance?

This devotional dance is performed to thank Goddess Durga by holding a dhunuchi, which contains the burning coconut husk with dhuno sprinkled on it. According to beliefs, before killing Mahishasura, Goddess Bhavani performed this dance to increase strength and energy. It starts from Saptami and continues till Ashtami and Navami. Aarti of Maa Durga is also performed from Dhunuchi.

What is Dhunuchi?

Dhuno is a plant resin of sal tree and dhunuchi is essentially an incense burner that holds the fire. They are traditionally made of clay that has natural insulation properties. It is usually lit by setting fire to the dry coconut husk on which dhuno and camphor are sprinkled. The aroma which comes from it is regarded as holy and is believed to have a purifying effect.
