Mumbai and Delhi reported a sharp spike in Covid-19 infections on Wednesday amid an Omicron scare and ongoing festive season.
Mumbai reported 490 new Covid cases on a day when Maharashtra recorded the highest single-day spike in 48 days with 1,201 fresh Covid cases. The financial capital saw a jump of more than 160 from the previous day but did not record any fatality caused due to the infection. However, eight new Covid deaths were reported in the state. Mumbai had reported 204 Covid cases on Monday and 327 on Tuesday.
No new cases of the Omicron variant were reported from Maharashtra on Wednesday. A total of 65 cases of the fast-spreading strain have been detected in the state so far. Out of these, 35 have been discharged following a negative RT PCR test result.
Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 125 new Covid cases, wshich is the highest in six months. The steady rise in daily Covid infections over the past few days amid an Omicron scare has prompted government to ban Christmas and New Year's Eve gatherings.
Delhi has reported 57 Omicron cases so far. Over 250 cases of the highly contagious strain of Covid have been detected in India.
