A wildfire in the Algarve region of southern Portugal is threatening several villages, with dozens of people already evacuated from their homes.

For the moment no injuries have been reported, but at least one house was ablaze.

Close to 400 firefighters and 130 vehicles have been deployed to the scene and will continue to work overnight to try to contain the fire.

The wildfire began in the early hours of Monday and was initially brought under control before reigniting later in the day, fuelled by strong winds and temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius.
