Over a lakh cases in 24 hrs, India's Covid outbreak at its worst

India on Sunday logged over a lakh new Covid cases, which is the highest daily spike since the start of the pandemic. India recorded 103,558 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. The country, reeling under a second surge of the virus, breached the peak of 99,181 seen in a single day during the first wave of the pandemic last September.

The number of cases recorded on Sunday are a sharp increase from the 92,961 reported a day earlier. In the past week, cases have grown 39%, the fastest rate for any country, turning India into the biggest current Covid hotspot.

India is only the second country after the US to add more than 100,000 cases in a single day at any time during the pandemic.
