A stern deadline by the education ministry has led to IITs placing ads for quota-based hiring of faculty members, a first for the institutes.

Up to this point, IITs had autonomy over recruitment but that is seeing a sweeping change with the education ministry writing to the institutes that reservation rules need to be adhered to and vacancies “especially in the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and other backward classes” be filled by September 4, 2022.

PM Modi led government in November 2019 had written to all IITs, IIMs and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research to implement reservation in faculty hiring.

This was faced by opposition by the institutes that requested the quota system be applicable only till assistant professor level hires.
