Glitter in clothes and cosmetic products is damaging rivers and lakes, according to a new study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials. Researchers shared all kinds of glitter seemed to impact the growth of micro algae and pond plants.
The study states that biodegradable alternatives of glitter are also no better for the environment.
Microplastics in glitter find their way into water bodies and could take years to degrade, harming freshwater species.
