The members of the Indian weightlifting contingent will be vying for a podium finish when they compete on Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in their category.
Ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will spearhead India’s campaign on Saturday.
The 27-year-old weightlifter who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics will now look to clinch her second Commonwealth Games Gold medal.
She had won gold at the 2018 edition of the CWG in Gold Coast and a silver at the 2014 edition of the event in the 48-kg category.
This year, the Manipur-based weightlifter will compete in the 49-kg category and her event will begin at 8 PM IST.
Apart from her, Sanket Mahadev Sargar will participate in the 55kg category and Gururaja Poojary, who won a silver medal at Gold Coast in the 56kg category will compete in the 61kg men’s category this time around. Their events will begin at 1.30 PM IST on Saturday.
From the women’s team, apart from Mirabai, Bindyarani Devi will also be competing in the 55kg category scheduled for 12.30 AM IST (Sunday).
India has had a number of podium finishes when it comes to weightlifting at the quadrennial event. With 125 medals including 43 gold, 48 silver, and 34 bronze medals in CWG history, India is only behind Australia which has 159 medals to its name.
