CWG Day 1: Evening Round-up - Shiva Thapa wins, TT & Badminton teams off to great starts

India's Shiva Thapa defeated Pakistan's Suleman Baloch 5-0 in the Round of 32 of the 63.5kg category in his opening bout at the Commonwealth Games 2022. The Indian pugilist will now face Scotland's Reese Lynch in the next round.

In Badminton, win for the mixed doubles pair of Sumeeth Reddy & Ashwini Ponappa, along with easy victories for Kidambi Srikant and PV Sindhu gave India an easy 3-0 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan.

The Women's Hockey team breezed past Ghana in their opening encounter of Pool A. Gurjit Kaur's double helped the Women in Blue beat the African side 5-0.

In the Men's Team Sprint event in Cycling, India narrowly missed out on bronze medal contention by 0.206 seconds, finishing 5th. In the 4000m team pursuit, the Indian men's team though finished last in the qualification event. The Women's team too failed to qualify for the medal races after finishing seventh in Team Sprint.

In the Men's Individual Triathlon event (Sprint Distance) India's Adarsh Nair (1:00:38) and Vishwanath Yadav (1:02:52) finished 30th and 33rd in the 50-man competition.

India's Men's Table tennis and Women's table Tennis sides defeated lowly Barbados and South Africa in their opening encounters on Day 1. A straight 3-0 win for both teams was no less than a walk in the park.

Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj finished third in his 100m backstroke heat. He clocked an impressive 54.68s time to reach the semifinals of the event. Meanwhile, Kushagra Rawat was eliminated in the Men's 400m Freestyle event after he finished last in Heat 3 while the experienced Sajan Prakash finished eighth in Men's 50m Butterfly and failed to qualify for the semis.

In Lawn Bowls, Taniya Choudhury lost her women's singles match to Scotland's Dee Hoggan 10-21 in the first round. She also lost to Daphne Arthur-Almond 20-21 in a closely fought encounter in round two. In the Men's Triples event India lost 6-23 to New Zealand in the first and 12-19 to Scotland in the second round.
