In Neeraj Chopra's absence, ace shuttler PV Sindhu has been named as the Flagbearer for the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games 2022 opening ceremony.
Neeraj, who was earlier appointed as the Flagbearer, had to pull out of the Commonwealth Games due to a thigh injury that he suffered during the World Athletics Championships finals.
"The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is delighted to announce shuttler Ms PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as the Flagbearer of Team India", said IOA in an official statement.
Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain were the other two names in contention but a 4-member commission of the Indian Olympic Association comprising of acting president Anil Khanna selected the two-time Olympic medalist as the leader of the pack.
"We are very happy to select Sindhu as the Flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony. We extend our congratulations to her and wish her and the other Team India athletes the very best for the Commonwealth Games", said IOA's General Secretary Rajeev Mehta.
