1983 World Cup-winning cricketer Sunil Gavaskar took a walk down memory lane and recalled an interesting chat on the field with his old flatmate and West Indies cricketer Joel Garner.
Gavaskar along with his former teammates who brought glory to the nation 40 years back, winning the first World Cup Trophy in 1983 after beating West Indies by 43 runs got together to celebrate the anniversary in an event sponsored by the Adani group.
The 73-year-old recalled how he was finding it tough to bat against Joel Garner in the final, along with whom he had played for Somerset.
Remembering the incident, Gavaskar who scored only 2 runs in the final said, 'As I went to the non-striker end, Garner is walking past me because I have shared flat with him I said, 'Hey bird how about one off the mark for your old flatmate?' I was on zero, He said, 'No man, no freebies for you. This is the World Cup final'.
