Australian batter suggests 40-over matches to ensure survival of ODIs

Australian batter Usman Khawaja believes that for ODI cricket to survive in the future, the 50-over games should be reduced to 40-over contests.

With the ODIs fast losing popularity due to the ever-increasing growth of T20 cricket, the 35-year-old feels this change would make the format more attractive for the stakeholders.

"50 overs is just that little bit too long now. Take out that little middle bit, you'd get to 25 overs and you'd look up and 'oh crap, there's only 15 overs left, let's go again'," Khawaja said in an interview.

Khawaja said that he enjoyed playing 40-over games previously when he took part in England Cricket Board's 40 league and this corrective measure could really help revive ODI cricket again.
