England and Wales Cricket Board appointed all-rounder Ben Stokes as the new England Test captain on Thursday.

Stokes will be England's 81st Test captain.

The all-rounder replaced Joe Root, who resigned as England Test captain after his team won only one of their last 17 Test matches.

Stokes has led the England Test team for only one match previously when Joe Root was on paternity leave in 2020.

Stokes' appointment is the first big decision made by Rob Key, who is the new managing director of men's cricket in England.
