India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur was adjudged Wisden Cricketer of the Year along with 4 other players, two from England and New Zealand each on Tuesday.
With this honour, Kaur became the first India Women’s player to be given the prestigious accolade and co-incidentally, she is the only woman in the list of 5 cricketers of the year named in the 2023 edition of Wisden Cricketer's Almanack that was published on April 17.
Kaur was chosen, reveals Wisden, primarily for leading her side to their first ODI series victory, a brutal 3-0 whitewash, over the English in their own backyard. A feat she achieved while also amassing 221 runs, including an unbeaten 143 in the second ODI.
Wisden also added that India’s silver-medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games under Harmanpreet Kaur was another reason why she was picked.
Apart from Kaur, England's Ben Foakes and Matthew Potts alongwith New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell were named Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year.
The Wisden Cricketer of the Year is an honour a player can only achieve once in their career which is determined majorly on the basis of their performance during the English home season.
