Root dethroned Marnus Labuschagne, who skipped to the 3rd spot. New Zealand's Kane Williamson climbed to the 2nd spot.
In the bowlers' rankings, India's Ravichandran Ashwin retained his number 1 spot despite not playing the WTC final vs Australia.
Ravindra Jadeja also held on to the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for all-rounders.
