KL Rahul who is being touted as one of the Indian cricket team's future captains was taken by surprise when he was handed the leadership duties by Virat Kohli during the South Africa tour.

The Lucknow Super Giants' skipper who spoke on the Red Bull Cricket Room on Clubhouse revealed how Virat Kohli entrusted him the responsibility of captaincy when he had the back spasm during 2nd Test vs South Africa. India had won the first Test and Virat Kohli was not taking part in the 2nd Test.
The then vice-captain Rahul said that the ex-skipper informed him on the day the Test was to start. Virat Kohli came to him on the bus and told him that his back wasn't great and he will have to captain the team.
Although India lost the Test series 2-1 and the following ODI series as well in South Africa, KL Rahul takes the opportunity as a great learning experience and added that his team fought till the very end.
