In a welcome turn of events for the Indian cricket team, amidst the aftermath of a crushing defeat, senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is poised to make a comeback for the second Test against South Africa. The match is scheduled to commence on January 3 in Cape Town.
Jadeja was absent from the opening Test after experiencing an "upper back spasm" on the morning of the first day at the Supersport Park. Despite this setback, there were positive signs on the third day of the first Test, as Jadeja was spotted participating in the pre-game warm-up session.
Observers noted that Jadeja appeared comfortable and pain-free during his involvement in the session. He engaged in several short sprints, ranging from 30 to 40 meters, and also participated in various fitness exercises.
A particularly encouraging observation was Jadeja’s involvement in bowling practice during the lunch break of the third day. Alongside reserve pacer Mukesh Kumar, Jadeja spent roughly 20 minutes bowling on a practice pitch under the watchful eye of Rajnikant, the team's strength and conditioning coach. Despite using only a two-step run-up, he consistently hit his marks and even managed to get some turn on a few deliveries.
Importantly, Jadeja showed no signs of discomfort throughout his bowling session, displaying fluidity in his movements.
Jadeja’s absence was keenly felt by the Indian team in their innings and 32-run defeat in the first Test. While Ravichandran Ashwin bowled 19 overs and took 1 for 40, he struggled to pose a significant threat to the South African batsmen. Jadeja's contributions, both as a bowler and as a lower-middle-order batter, have been impactful in the past, particularly in SENA countries, and his presence could have potentially altered the course of the match.
With four days remaining before the second Test, there is a strong likelihood that Jadeja will be fit to play, providing a much-needed boost to the Indian side.
