Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar wants to know why the Asia Cup 'Super Four' matches weren't from Colombo to the drier venue of Hambantota, emphasizing that the "real story" needs to be uncovered. He also stressed the importance of players considering the "bigger picture" in such situations.
The Asia Cup, hosted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is taking place in a 'Hybrid Model' due to India's refusal to play in Pakistan. As a result, all of India's matches are being held in Sri Lanka. Heavy rain predictions in Colombo led to discussions about relocating the matches to Hambantota, but the Asian Cricket Council stuck to the original schedule.
In a conversation with Sports Today, Gavaskar suggested that players might have been the ones who didn't want to go to Hambantota.
He said, "Well, somebody should find the real story. It appears from cricketing points, that it was probably the players who didn't want to go to Hambantota. So administrators had to at the last moment, change it from Hambantota to Colombo despite knowing Colombo could have pretty dicey weather."
He clarified that he was not singling out players from any particular team but referred to players from all teams participating in the tournament.
While Gavaskar supports modern-day players having a say in match scheduling, he also believes they should be adaptable when unforeseen circumstances arise, such as poor weather. He highlighted that rain could affect the India-Pakistan match scheduled for September 10, especially after the first encounter between the arch-rivals was called off due to rain.
Gavaskar emphasized that although players' mental well-being, gym facilities, and practice conditions are essential, they should also consider the bigger picture. Hambantota was a venue with a lower chance of rain compared to Colombo, and experimentation with different venues is essential for World Cup preparation.
In conclusion, Gavaskar called for a balance between player considerations and tournament priorities, recognizing that the Asia Cup remains crucial while preparing for the upcoming World Cup.
