Virat Kohli's wait for his 71st international ton may be getting longer but he still holds the record for the 3rd-most tons in international cricket. As the former India skipper plays his 100th Test in Mohali, here are his 5 most memorable tons in Test cricket.
169 vs Australia (Melbourne, 2014)
It was the summer of 2014 in Australia and Virat Kohli made the Melbourne crowd sit up and take notice of him. With India already 2-0 down in the series, the Aussies posted 530 in the 1st innings. Kohli walked in at the number 4 spot and smashed 169 off 272 balls. The 'Virat' effort helped India draw the Test.
153 vs South Africa (Centurion, 2018)
The year was 2018 and Team India was determined to justify their claim of being the best travelling side in the world. It all started with the series in South Africa. In reply to the 335 by Proteas in the 1st innings of the Centurion Test, Virat stood tall with a 217-ball-153. He was the one-man army in that game but India couldn't save the Test due to a batting failure in the 2nd innings.
103 vs England (Nottinghum, 2018)
Most experts had written Kohli off after a nightmare tour to England in 2014. But a different Virat returned to England 4 years later and this time he finished as the highest run-getter of the series with 593 runs in 5 Tests. The highlight of the tour was the Nottingham Test. After a gritty 97 in the first innings, Virat backed it up with 103 in the second. His super show helped India win the Test and bounce back in the series.
254* vs South Africa (Pune, 2019)
Kohli followed up his brilliant form against South Africa in the home Test series the very next year. This time he smashed an unbeaten 254 in the Pune Test. It still remains the highest score by an Indian captain. Interestingly, the top 3 scores on that list belong to the superstar from Delhi. His 7th double hundred in whites helped India win the game by an innings and 137 runs.
Two back-to-back double tons vs Sri Lanka (2017)
Virat didn't have any double ton in his career till 2016 but in the next 3 years, he had 7. Two of which were scored in back-to-back Tests vs Sri Lanka in 2017. 213 in Nagpur and 243 in Delhi. No other captain in the history of Test cricket has scored as many double tons as Virat.
