West Bengal government has decided to upgrade ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's security cover to the Z category.
The former Indian captain enjoyed a Y security cover earlier and its tenure expired on Tuesday. While no specific reason behind the beef-up has come to the fore, a senior official informed that a review was done as per the protocol and the decision was taken to raise Ganguly's security cordon to Z category.
Earlier, the 50-year-old had been given a Z category almost 2 decades ago when the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba had threatened to kidnap him.
Ganguly who is currently with his IPL team Delhi Capitals will be accorded the Z category security from May 21st when he returns to Kolkata.
As per the new arrangement, the legendary cricketer will have 8-10 policemen guarding him.
