It is turning out to be a World Cup of upsets as 2014 World Cup winners Germany fell to a 2-1 surprising defeat against the Samurai Blues in their Group E opener at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar, on Wednesday.
Germany were looking in control in the first half and went on to break the deadlock in the 33rd minute after Ilkay Gundogan successfully converted his spot kick in the bottom-left corner to put Die Mannschaft ahead.
However, Germany's inability to kill the game in the second half cost them the 3 points as 2nd half substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano gave Japan a well-deserved comeback to win their first-ever FIFA World Cup match in which the team was a goal down.
