While Lionel Messi’s Argentina lifted the World Cup after a 4-2 win on penalties, it was France’s Kylian Mbappe who took home the Golden Boot after scoring a hat-trick on the night.
Mbappe finished the tournament as the highest goal-scorer with 8 goals, one more than Lionel Messi, who himself bagged a brace during the match.
It turned out to be a game of fluctuating fortunes that saw France come from behind twice to level the game, and yet Les Bleus ended up on the losing side.
In fact, trailing 0-2, France were down and out till the 80th minute, but that’s when Kylian Mbappe once again showed his true class, scoring 2 goals in 2 minutes which included a penalty to breathe life into the game.
And when Argentina once again took the lead in extra time through Lionel Messi, it was Mbappe again, completing his hat-trick with yet another successful spot-kick to overtake Messi.
There’s no denying though that Mbappe would have traded it all for the World Cup crown but at least he’s not going home completely empty-handed.
