Drawn in a group alongside Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana, Portugal are the big favourites to qualify from Group H.
Progress to the knock-out stages shouldn't be too much of a problem, despite having to face Uruguay, who knocked them out in 2018 in the Round of 16.
Once again Portugal's World Cup hopes rest upon the shoulders of one man - Cristiano Ronaldo. Qatar 2022 will be the fifth World Cup finals appearance for the all-time leading scorer in men's international football.
But at 37 years old, it's also likely to be his last.
It's in the latter stages of the tournament where Ronaldo will have to shine if Portugal are going to have a chance of glory.
Portugal Team News
Frozen out of the team at Manchester United by manager Erik Tan Hag and made to train by himself after he refused to come on as a substitute in an EPL game against Tottenham, Ronaldo's club future is up in the air. With just days left before the big kick-off in Qatar, it's unclear whether he will play for the Old Trafford club again, with a likely January exit on the cards.
But for his country, he's still Portugal's main man. With 117 goals, no male footballer has scored more international goals.
Yet this is not a one-man team. The 2016 European Championship winners have lots of other quality players including Man Utd teammate Bruno Fernandes, Manchester City trio Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva. and the likes of Andre Silva and Joao Felix.
Whether Ronaldo's aging legs can inspire Portugal to a first-ever World Cup remains to be seen. But few would dare to write off his career just yet.
