Wayne Rooney has stepped down as the manager of embattled League One club Derby County. The former Manchester United and England great ended his playing career with the Rams before taking his first step in management with the club in November 2020.
Derby was plunged into administration at the start of last season and were relegated from the Championship despite Rooney's efforts to keep them up after they were docked 21 points because of its financial problems.
In a statement Rooney said that the administrators tried tremendously hard to change his decision but he had made up his mind. 'Personally, I feel the club now needs to be led by someone with fresh energy and not affected by the events that have happened over the last 18 months, the 36-year-old added.
