Despite a 4-2 win against Wales in the final pool encounter, India missed out on a direct entry into the quarter-finals of the Hockey World Cup.
While goals from Shamsher Singh & Akashdeep Singh put India 2-0 ahead, Wales made a rousing comeback with 2 goals from 2 penalty corners in the space of 3 minutes.

However, the hosts once again took the lead in the very next minute, with Akashdeep Singh scoring his second of the night. Captain Harmanpreet Singh then made it 4-2 by successfully converting a penalty corner in the final quarter.
Despite staying unbeaten in the pool, India finished second behind England due to an inferior goal difference. They will now face Pool C's 3rd placed team New Zealand in a crossover match for a place in the last eight.
