2001... The last time when an Australian opener in Matthew Hayden crossed the 150-run mark in a Test match in India. And it took 22 years for someone to achieve this special milestone once again as Usman Khawaja scored a solid 180 off 422 balls in 1st innings of the 4th Test vs India in Ahmedabad.
Interestingly, this was the 3rd tour to India for the 36-year-old but he was only carrying drinks on his previous 2 visits. Khawaja got an extended opportunity as an opener in the 4-match Test series and he notched up his maiden Test hundred in India in the final game.
However, Ravichandran Ashwin led India's fightback with his 32nd 5-wicket-haul in Tests as Australia lost last 6 wickets for 102 runs. But the visitors still posted a mammoth total of 480 in the 1st innings.
