Thursday marked the unveiling of the IPL 2024's initial 21-match lineup, setting the stage for the 17th season's grand commencement at the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This much-anticipated opener will see the Chennai Super Kings, the reigning champions, squaring off against the formidable Royal Challengers Bangalore, setting the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating season.
The announced schedule spans the first 17 days of the tournament, from March 22 to April 7. Arun Singh Dhumal, the IPL Chairman had earlier confirmed that the unveiling of the remaining games would follow the Election Commission of India's announcement of the general election dates, expected in the first or second week of March. This staggered announcement strategy ensures the seamless integration of cricket festivities with the national electoral calendar.
Adding to the glamour and excitement, Dhumal had also announced that a dazzling opening ceremony would precede the inaugural match, celebrating the return of cricket's biggest extravaganza to its loyal fans. The decision to host the first match at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium pays homage to the Chennai Super Kings, led by cricket luminary MS Dhoni, as they embark on their title defense.
In a notable adjustment, the Delhi Capitals will host their initial two home games in Vizag due to the unavailability of the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which will not be ready in time following the Women's Premier League's conclusion.
Dhumal expressed optimism that the IPL could be conducted entirely within India's borders, notwithstanding the coinciding election schedule.
