The mentor of the new IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants wanted players to give full commitment and don't think of franchise cricket as a platform for India call-up.
While speaking to Boria Majumdar, Gambhir said that if one thinks of playing for India and started saying that Lucknow will provide me the platform, then that person is being dishonest to the franchise. But if you deliver for a franchise, then eventually you will end up playing for India.
Gambhir shared his experience as a captain and player during his IPL days and said, "When I’ve captained, I have always said I don’t want players thinking of playing for India. I want players thinking of playing for the franchise. Playing for India is just the byproduct."

Gambhir further added that IPL is a platform to showcase individual talent to the world, not a platform to get a national call-up.
