A day after Chennai Super Kings took cricket world by surprise, new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad spoke about the thought process he intends to follow going forward.

In a video shared by IPL, Gaikwad revealed that he had an inkling about taking the baton from MS Dhoni since last season.

A few weeks ago, Dhoni had hinted at a 'new role' on his social media, which got the fans buzzing about the veteran's move.

'Everyone kept pointing towards me, that you are the next captain and I was like, maybe it meant something else for social media but back of the mind, it was there,' Gaikwad said in the video.

'It feels great to be part of such a wonderful franchise, right from the day my IPL journey started and to be able to be trusted by MS Dhoni for leadership role, obviously that speaks a lot,' the young captain remarked.

With the team's working systems in place and seniors to rely on, the 27-year-old seemed certain he needn't change anything going forward.

Gaikwad will face off against former teammate Faf du Plessis in the opening clash on March 22 and expressed his delight at the thought of sharing the stage with him at the toss.
