Mary Kom, India's iconic boxer and a beacon of sporting excellence, has declared her retirement from professional boxing, marking the end of a glittering career that saw her ascend to the pinnacle of the sport. The 6-time world champion, aged 41, has attributed her decision to step away from the ring to the age limitations set by the International Boxing Association (IBA), which restricts competitors in elite-level events to those under 40 years of age.

Despite her age, Mary Kom's passion and desire to compete remain undiminished, but the regulations compel her to conclude her illustrious journey. "I have the hunger still but unfortunately because of the age limit it is over I cannot compete in any competition. I want to play more but I am being forced to quit (due to the age limit). I have to retire. I have achieved everything in my life," she expressed during a farewell event.

Mary Kom's legacy in boxing is unparalleled, being the first female boxer ever to secure six world titles. Her achievements include being a five-time Asian champion and clinching a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, the first by an Indian female boxer. She won everything, including an Olympic medal - a bronze at the 2012 Games in London.

Over the years, Mary Kom's dominance in the ring was further solidified with gold medals at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships across various editions, making her the first Indian to achieve such a feat.

Her journey to international acclaim began at the age of 18, making a significant impact at the inaugural world meet in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where she showcased her exceptional talent despite a narrow miss in the 48kg category final.

Her return to the ring after maternity breaks further exemplified her resilience and dedication, culminating in a triumphant victory in the 2018 World Championships in Delhi for her sixth world title. She is finishing her career with eight world medals, a record in the boxing world, unmatched by any other male or female boxer, underscoring a career that has left an indelible mark on the sport and inspired countless athletes worldwide.
