Mirabai Chanu wins gold in Singapore, qualifies for CWG 2022

Ace Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu who won the silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 event last year has qualified for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022 after winning gold at the Singapore Weightlifting International on Friday. The 27-year-old Olympic medallist who qualified for the 55 kg weight class category was fighting in the said category for the first time. She lifted 191 kg, (86kgs in Snatch and 105 kg in Clean and Jerk.

Australian weightlifter Jessica Sewastenko who was placed 2nd lifted 167 kgs, 24 kgs less than the Manipur-based athlete. Malaysia's Elly Cassandra Englebert was 3rd with 165 kgs. 

Chanu who had pulled out of the world championship was participating in the first event after winning her silver medal in Tokyo. She has also qualified for the 49kg weight category on the basis of her CWG rankings. The mega event which will be held in Birmingham will begin on 28th July, this year.
