Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will not lift at the upcoming World Championships, according to an Indian Express report.
But Chanu has mader herself available for the weigh-in for the 49kg category as well as doping tests at the global event, to remain in contention for Paris 2024 qualification, the report stated.
According to the International Weightlifting Federation rules, athletes need not necessarily attempt a lift at the tournament. Instead, they can take part in the weigh-in and make themselves available for the doping tests.
Participating in the World Championships is mandatory to qualify for the Paris Olympics but Chanu's focus remains Asian Games, the only event where she is yet to win a medal.
Sportstar quoted Chanu's coach Vijay Sharma, 'It is not possible to compete in two back-to-back events (and give one’s best).'
Weightlifting at Asiad commences September 30 while the world tournament will run from September 4 to September 17.
