The PGA Tour has suspended 17 members including major winners Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia for participating in Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational and they are no longer eligible to play in PGA Tour tournaments.
In a statement, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said that the players competing this week without releases are suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate in the PGA Tour tournament.
In a reply, LIV Golf issued a statement: "It's troubling that the Tour, an organisation dedicated to creating opportunities for golfers to play the game, is the entity blocking golfers from playing."
The LIV Golf series is an inaugural golf event that is trying to compete with the PGA Tour. The tour consists of eight events across the world, beginning in London on Thursday. The inaugural event is over three days unlike typical golf events of four days, with the 48-man field beginning at the same time with a shotgun start.
