Three months ago, National Anti-Doping Agency officials showed up at a Delhi state meet race at the Jawahralal Nehru Stadium.
Upon seeing them, racers meant to participate took off, barring one. The athlete ran alone, claiming he had nothing to hide.
And now, The Indian Express has reported that the lone sprinter in question has also returned a positive on a drug test.
The report states that the test was conducted on September 26, the day of the race.
Lalit Kumar, the racer, tested positive for anabolic steroid drostanolone metabolite, a performance-enhancing drug.
However, The Indian Express also quoted Kumar denying the allegations, 'Agar maine dope liya hota toh mai final me aata hi nahi. (Had I taken any performance-enhancing drugs, I would have fled like the rest). I have never taken any drugs… I feel some coaches are involved in framing me.'
The athlete went on to say that he cannot afford another test to prove his innocence and neither does he have any proof to present to the anti-doping agency.
