In a bold move, Russia's top-ranked tennis player Daria Kasatkina has come out as gay. The 25-year-old, who lost in the semifinals of the 2022 French Open, said that she was inspired to come out after Russian footballer Nadya Karpova revealed she was gay.
'Living in the closet is impossible. It is too hard and pointless', added the current world No. 12. Kasatkina also revealed that she is in a relationship with a woman and living in peace with herself was the only thing that mattered to her.
Her revelation came at a time when the Russian lawmakers are working towards broadening its law with a complete ban on the promotion of LGBTQ+ relationships. Russia’s existing 'gay propaganda' law has been used to stop gay pride marches and detain gay rights activists.
Speaking out against the law, Kasatkina said that this notion of someone wanting to be gay or becoming gay is ridiculous. If there is a choice, no one would choose to be gay and make their lives harder, especially in Russia. 'What’s the point?' she questioned.
