Seven top Indian badminton players, including 2-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, have clinched their spots at the upcoming Paris Olympics, spanning four different categories. This milestone was achieved based on their standings in the Olympic Games Qualification rankings, with the official confirmation arriving on Monday, the deadline set by the International Badminton Federation (BWF).
PV Sindhu, a former world champion with a storied history including a silver and a bronze medal in previous Olympics, was ranked 12th in the women’s singles category. She has long been celebrated as one of India's most prominent athletes and her qualification marks another significant chapter in her illustrious career.
In men’s singles, HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen had already secured their Olympic berths well ahead of the deadline, thanks to their consistent performances throughout the qualification period. By the final cutoff, Prannoy was ranked ninth and Sen thirteenth, ensuring their participation in the global event.
Additionally, India will have strong representation in the men’s doubles category. The dynamic duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked third at the close of the Olympic qualification cycle, have not only qualified but are also considered one of the country’s best medal prospects in badminton for the Paris Olympics.
In women's doubles, the pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa managed to make the cut by finishing 13th in the rankings at the end of the qualification period. Their qualification is a testament to their hard work and determination over the past competitive season.
However, not all was favorable for Indian badminton, as the women's doubles team consisting of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand narrowly missed out on qualifying, highlighting the stiff competition and stringent criteria set for Olympic qualification.
The qualification of these athletes is based on the BWF’s criteria, which stipulates that the top-16 shuttlers in both men's and women's singles on the cutoff date earn their places at the quadrennial sporting spectacle. This process ensures that only the world's elite badminton players compete on the sport's most prestigious stage, promising a high level of competition.
