In a rapid conclusion to his participation at the Indian Wells ATP tournament, Sumit Nagal found himself on the losing end of a straight-set match against Canada's Milos Raonic. Despite entering the main draw fortuitously as a 'lucky loser' following Rafael Nadal's withdrawal, Nagal's stint was short-lived.

Ranked 101st in the ATP standings, the Indian competitor was overcome by Raonic with scores of 3-6, 3-6 in a contest that unfolded over an hour and twenty-eight minutes. Raonic, who was playing under a protected ranking of 224, managed to convert three out of twelve break points he secured throughout the match. Nagal, in contrast, failed to capitalize on the two break points he acquired, marking a challenging day on the court for him.

Nagal's entry into the tournament's main draw came unexpectedly after he was defeated in the second round of the qualifiers. However, a slot opened up following the eleventh-hour pullout of Rafael Nadal, who cited unpreparedness as his reason for not participating. Nadal has been grappling with injury concerns and even underwent hip surgery in the previous season.

The beginning of the year saw Nagal making headlines when he progressed to the second round of the Australian Open, a significant achievement that contributed to his ascent into the ATP's top-100 rankings. This rise in the rankings was a crucial milestone for Nagal, positioning him closer to qualifying for the Paris Olympics, provided he maintains or improves his standing in the competitive tennis landscape.
