Defending champion Naomi Osaka had an unexpectedly tough opening round game at the Australian Open. Playing her 1st round match against Colombian Camila Osorio, Osaka was stretched in a 6-3, 6-3 straight sets win to enter the 2nd round at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.

The former World number 1 from Japan raced to a 5-0 lead earlier but Osorio was in no mood to give up and fought back with some zeal. Osaka was forced to save two break points in the first set and 2 more in the 2nd before completing her 6-3, 6-3 straight sets win over the world number 50 from Colombia.
Osaka now plays American Madison Brengle who is ranked 59th in the WTA rankings in the 2nd round at the Australian Open.
