Spain's Garbine Muguruza started her Australian Open captain with a thumping 1st round victory where the 3rd seed comfortably beat Clara Burel of France 6-3, 6-4. Muguruza will now face France's Alize Cornet for a place in the 3rd round.
14th seed Simona Halep too had an easy outing as she reached women's singles 2nd round after ousting Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday.
In the men's draw, 2nd seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia went through to the second round of the Australian Open after beating Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland 6-1, 6-4, 7-6.
