The World Athletics Championships 2022 has been fantastic for the Indian contingent as the javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra bagged the silver. Along with Chopra, there were 5 Indians in the final of the world event for the very first time.
This was India's best-ever performance in the history of the event. In 2015 & 2019, India had three finalists.
Chopra's compatriot Rohit Yadav finished in 10th position in the final of the men's javelin throw event. Annu Rani also reached the final in the women's javelin throw and finished seventh.
Eldhose Paul who earlier became the first Indian to enter the triple jump final at the world championships finished ninth in the final. Murali Sreeshankar finished seventh in the men’s long jump while Avinash Sable finished in 11th position in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Prior to Chopra's silver medal at the world championships, India had never won a silver in the event. The only medal that India won was the bronze by Anju Bobby George in WAC, Paris in 2003.
