No host nation has ever won the T20 World Cup, but the West Indies will aim to change that trend at the 2024 T20 World Cup. With the rich legacy of leading the West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles as a captain, Daren Sammy now faces the challenge of repeating this feat, this time as the head coach.

Appointed as the head coach of the West Indies limited-overs teams last year, Sammy has a squad that features just two of his former mates who won the World Cup twice with him before, Andre Russell and Johnson Charles.

The West Indies' recent performances in T20 World Cups have been less than stellar. In 2021, under Kieron Pollard's captaincy, the team was knocked out in the group stage in the UAE with just a single win. The following year, Nicholas Pooran's squad failed to even qualify for the main round in Australia. However, with Rovman Powell now at the helm, there is renewed hope that the Caribbean side can emerge as strong contenders for the title.

The West Indies and England are currently the only teams to have won the T20 World Cup twice. Rovman Powell's squad aspires not only to clinch their third title but also to become the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil.

Nicholas Pooran, relieved of captaincy duties, could be a pivotal figure in the middle order. Pooran had an impressive IPL season, scoring 499 runs at a strike rate of 178.21 for the Lucknow Super Giants. His performance could be crucial to West Indies' success.

The absence of Sunil Narine, who played a vital role in Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL victory as the league's MVP, will be felt. However, Andre Russell is expected to be a significant force during the tournament. The all-round depth in the West Indies' lower order could also play a critical role in their quest for a third-world title.

Jason Holder's injury has ruled him out of the tournament, but Obed McCoy has been named to strengthen the bowling attack in Holder's absence. This addition could be vital for the team's balance and effectiveness.

The West Indies' recent 3-0 series sweep against South Africa underscores their potential to be dark horses in the competition. Their performance indicates that they should not be underestimated, and other teams will need to be wary of their capabilities.

With the weight of history and the support of home crowds, the West Indies are set to make a strong statement at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if they can break the host nation jinx and claim the title on their own turf.
