The BJP on Monday appointed party MP Sukanta Majumdar its West Bengal unit president, replacing Dilip Ghosh. The 57-year-old has been made a national Vice President of the party in a reorganisation of its leadership.

The development comes after four BJP MLAs have returned to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The most recent high-profile defection was of MP Babul Supriyo, who was asked to resign in a major cabinet reshuffle

Before him, MLAs Biswajit Das, Tanmoy Ghosh and more prominently Mukul Roy had switched sides.

Although the BJP had made tall claims before the state assembly polls, it had managed to win only 77 seats while Mamata Banerjee led TMC managed to not only win the election but also better its previous tally
