A drone has captured surreal footage of a volcano, near Iceland's capital, spewing red lava from a 'dangerously' close distance.

It was captured by drone pilot Bjorn Steinbekk's, when he flew it too close to Fagradalsfjall through the eruption.

He then shared the footage on Facebook, where it took no time to go viral.

The volcano began erupting last week, for the first time in 800 years, reports suggest and fortunately has not put anyone in danger. As per Icelandic Meteorological Office, the lava is less than 1 square kilometre in size.
