The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced at CES 2023 that Qi 2, a new standard for wirelessly charging smartphones and other mobile devices, will be available later this year.
Qi 2 has incorporated Apple's MagSafe technology, which allows for increased energy efficiency and faster charging by aligning phones and other battery-powered mobile devices with charging equipment.
The new standard aims to provide a single, global standard for wireless charging and increase compatibility between different devices.
The introduction of the Qi 2 standard will broaden the wireless charging industry by allowing additional accessories to be charged that would not be possible with current flat surface-to-flat surface devices.
Qi 2 will enable quicker charging for some devices due to its enhanced efficiency and compatibility; also, it will open the way for major future gains in wireless charging rates that are safe, energy-efficient, and will not limit battery life or harm a user's phone.
Qi 2-certified phones and chargers are expected to be available on the market by the 2023 holiday season.
