This year, Google is shaking things up by releasing the Pixel 8a ahead of the usual Google IO event scheduled for Tuesday, May 14th at 10:30 PM IST. The Pixel 8a has already made its debut in India, and it's available for pre-order starting at Rs. 52,999. If you're considering whether to grab one, here are some insights from our hands-on experience to help you decide.
The new Pixel 8a merges the best features of the standard Pixel 8 into a more wallet-friendly package. It boasts the same Tensor G3 chip and a crisp 120Hz OLED display, a step up from last year's 90Hz on the Pixel 7a. Although the screen is slightly smaller at 6.1 inches compared to 6.2 inches on the Pixel 8 and comes with thicker bezels, the overall size remains similar. The back sports a chic matte finish made from recycled plastic, intended to mimic cashmere—it feels premium! It's also water-resistant, though with a slightly lower IP67 rating compared to the Pixel 8's IP68.
Despite a somewhat smaller 4,492mAh battery, Google has enhanced the power efficiency, promising even longer battery life than previous models. This year also introduces a 256GB storage option—a first for the Pixel A-series—and up to seven years of software and security updates, significantly more than Pixel 7a. Color-wise, there are a couple of options to choose from like Bay, Porcelain, and Obsidian—the latter being the exclusive choice for the 256GB model. Our favourite is the new Aloe hue; it's definitely a standout.
Camera-wise, the setup remains unchanged from the Pixel 7a, featuring 64MP wide and 13MP ultra-wide sensors. Upfront there's a 13MP camera for selfies. We're expecting similarly impressive photos, but more testing is on the agenda. Powered by the Tensor G3 chip, the Pixel 8a supports all the advanced AI features of the Pixel 8, like Magic Eraser and Live Translate. However, it skips some pro camera controls and faster wireless charging, and it doesn’t offer a dedicated zoom lens like the Pixel 8 Pro.

For Rs. 23,000 less than the flagship Pixel 8, you're getting a solid phone packed with top-notch features. Although it's pricier than last year’s Pixel 7a and not as cheap as in the U.S., it's a tempting offer for anyone who loves the Pixel 8's capabilities but prefers something more budget-friendly.
