OpenAI's widely used AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, experienced a global outage on June 4th, 2024. A significant number of users reported encountering issues with the platform, rendering it unable to generate responses to their queries.
Downdetector, a website that tracks online service outages, indicated that problems began surfacing around 12:00 PM IST. The outage peaked at approximately 12:45 PM IST, impacting users for over an hour.
Many users were unable to generate responses from ChatGPT. While some could type their queries into the chat window, the enter button remained unresponsive, preventing them from submitting their requests. Additionally, users on the website reported being unable to access their previous chat history.
Based on Downdetector's findings, 81% of reported issues were associated with ChatGPT itself. Around 14% of users encountered difficulties accessing the OpenAI website, and only 5% experienced problems with the app.
OpenAI's status page acknowledged the outage, stating that ChatGPT was unavailable for a portion of its users. The company confirmed that they were investigating the issue and working towards a resolution.
As ChatGPT went down, many users flocked to X, a social media platform (formerly known as Twitter), to inquire about the outage and share their experiences. Some users expressed humor through memes and lighthearted comments, while others highlighted their dependence on ChatGPT for various tasks.
This is not the first time ChatGPT has encountered an outage. In May 2024, a similar incident left nearly 90% of users unable to access the service, with the Android app displaying server error messages.
At the time of this writing, there is no official confirmation regarding the cause of the outage or when ChatGPT will be fully functional again. It is recommended that users monitor OpenAI's status page for updates.
