A supermoon, an awe-inspiring occurrence in the night sky, is a celestial event where the Moon appears larger and brighter than usual. But, guess what? August 2023 will feature not one but two supermoons!
1st August 2023 Sturgeon Supermoon: The first supermoon, Suer Sturgeon Moon, will be larger and brighter than usual, and is scheduled to grace the night sky on Monday and Tuesday. It will be approximately 3,57,530 kilometres away from Earth.
The Sturgeon supermoon will be visible in India at night on August 1, but will be at its brightest around 12:01 a.m. on August 2.
30th August 2023 Blue Supermoon: The second supermoon, called a Blue Moon, will occur on August 30 and will be even closer, at a mere 3,57,344 kilometres distant. A blue moon refers to the rare phenomenon of having two full moons within the same calendar month.
Experiencing two full supermoons in a single month is a unique event. The last time this happened was in 2018, and it will not occur again until 2037.
Scientists and astronomers around the world, like Gianluca Masi, founder of the Virtual Telescope Project, are enthusiastic about observing and capturing the beauty of these double supermoons.
To fully appreciate these celestial events, clear skies are essential. Binoculars or backyard telescopes can enhance the viewing experience, highlighting lunar maria and rays emanating from lunar craters.
During a supermoon, the Moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon. As it rises on the horizon, it creates an illusion of being closer to Earth, adding to its enchanting allure.
August promises a rare celestial treat with the occurrence of both a supermoon and a blue moon in the same month. Don't miss the opportunity to witness this breathtaking display of nature's wonders.
So, mark your calendars, find a spot with uninterrupted views, and prepare to be spellbound by the captivating aura of the supermoon.
