A recent tweet by PETA India, saying that using horses for wedding processions was 'cruel' and 'abusive', has left the Internet divided.

Some social media users were in agreement with PETA, saying that it will be a kind gesture if horses were no longer used for weddings in India. But many reacted asking, isn't riding horses in polo matches also cruel? Some said that PETA does not understand Indian customs and traditions, especially that a groom does not actually ride a 'horse'.

With the onset of the wedding season in India, the animal welfare organisation has been campaigning to eradicate this age-old practice. Earlier, it also put up billboards in Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Jaipur asking people to stop using painful spiked bits to control horses at weddings.

Actor and comedian Raju Srivastava also starred in a video to highlight the suffering of horses used for weddings and other ceremonies.
