After losing his three previous Grand Slam finals, Dominic Thiem finally got past the final hurdle to win the US Open title. The 2nd seed and world number 3 beat 5th seed Alexander Zverev in a marathon that lasted over 4 hours to win 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. This is for the first time in the US Open that a player has won the final after losing the opening two sets and also the first slam final which was decided by a tie-breaker in the 5th and final set. Interestingly, Thiem is the first Grand Slam champion apart from Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka to win since the 2016 US Open.
