Yogi Adityanath recently announced the creation of the Uttar Pradesh Special Security Force, which will have powers like arresting someone without a warrant. What happens when a security force is granted extensive discretionary powers? BOOM spoke with Vikram Singh, Former DGP, Uttar Pradesh who welcomed the decision citing security concerns in the state and Raja Bagga, Sr Researcher, Police Reform Programme, CHRI who said that it will increase the risk of custodial deaths - India already sees over 100 custodial deaths a year and this will only increase the problem.
