In some good news, a Nile hippopotamus calf was recently born at the Zacango Ecological Park in Mexico. Zoo experts are tending to the newborn, but survival chances seem low as the mother hippo Tamba has had problems feeding her previous babies and could not manage their upbringing. The species is listed as 'vulnerable' on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to the fragmentation of its habitat and illegal and indiscriminate hunting.
